Biosphere Reserve El Vizcaino
Baja California Sur has several protected areas and sites that are world heritage sites for its rich history and natural beauty. The most prominent are:

  • Islands and Protected Areas of the Sea of Cortez.
  • Cave Paintings in Sierra de San Francisco.
  • Vizcaino Whale Sanctuary.
  • Loreto Bay National Park.
  • Cabo Pulmo National Park.
  • Bighorn Sheep.

  • The bighorn sheep is a species under priority special protection. In Mexico it makes its home in the arid and semi-mountainous terrain northwest of the states of Sonora, Baja California and Baja California Sur. This Desert Sheep is one of four sheep in North America and is the world’s most valued species.

The Biosphere Reserve, El Vizcaino, lies within the Ejido lands of “Lic. Alfredo V. Bonfil, “as is the only protected zone for Bighorn Sheep. To protect this species, in 1996 the ejido was registered as UMA (Unit of Management and Use) giving rise to the Program for Conservation, Management and Sustainable Utilization of Bighorn Sheep and their habitat in the Biosphere Reserve of El Vizcaino, coordinated by the Reserve’s Administration.cuadrofinal
